Three.js interaction

The question

Does the third dimension build the information structure, or the background? If it doesn't build the structure, it isn't used.

Why this question

Most 3D on the web is decoration that reacts to scrolling. The page gets heavier and there is no more to read. Three dimensions are justified only when they do what two cannot: a space where distance is similarity and travel is selection.

Evidence

• Coordinates that mean something – Distance of Thinking – Three.js builds a language model's next-token probability field as a space. Each token's 4,096-dimension embedding is projected into three, and nearby tokens are joined by lines. At each step the top six candidates sit in probability order and form a tunnel: the likeliest ahead, the unlikely ones on the outer ring. Whatever token the visitor passes through is fixed as the answer. A prototype built in four days and 22 commits (output).
• Where two dimensions were enough – Synthetic Vision Fund – generated p5.js imagery used as the face of the product rather than wallpaper behind it. The same question, answered without a third dimension: here what built belief was the procedure, not a space.
• This site – no 3D at all. Reading a project needs no coordinates, so there is no three.js dependency.

What holds

Three dimensions win only when coordinates mean something. In the probability field, nearer is more plausible. That one rule removed the need to explain the screen.

Travel has to be selection. If what is shown and what happens are different things, 3D is a picture. So sampling is intervened in directly, and the flight path becomes the answer. Fly straight and it follows the likeliest path.

If it is decoration, leave it out. That is why this site has no 3D. Where reading needs no coordinates, it only adds weight.

Not verified yet

• Hardware steering – the tilt-sensor branch selection is built, but the Arduino controller was never tested on real hardware. The published recording was steered with a mouse and a scroll wheel.
• Long runs – exhibition mode falls back to an attract loop after 75 seconds without input. Stability over a long exhibition was not checked.
• Deployment – Web Serial needs a secure page, so the piece ran on one HTTPS address on a private network. There is no way yet to attach the same steering in an ordinary deployment.
